On January 7th, a composting vendor (Java's Compost) gave a presentation to the Environmental Commission, members of Sustainable Verona, and members of the public. The idea they presented was to bring accessible and reliable composting to more residents of Verona. Basically, they indicated that anything that you would put on your dinner plate to eat (food scraps, bones, egg shells, etc.), could be accepted as compost material. The goal would be to enable people to compost about 1/3 of their waste, and, if they wanted, get nutrient rich soil in return to use on their property. On a larger scale over the long term, if a great deal of people are interested, the program could eventually reduce Verona's garbage tonnage, which could make the program more cost effective to those interested residents. On January 7th, a composting vendor (
Java's Compost) gave a presentation to the Environmental Commission, members of Sustainable Verona, and members of the public.
At that point, we could start seeing a town-wide composting pickup program that could be subsidized by the Town because our taxes would no longer be paying for as much garbage removal with this waste stream separated out.
Java requires a minimum of about 50 families per town to participate to make it worth the service to that town. Our initial inquiry would be to see if we have enough families in town through PlanetCivic. So please let us know if you would be interested in a more accessible composting program in Verona!
For now the cost from Java for individual families are as follows:
a) A weekly pickup costs residents $12.38 per week, $49.52 per month totaling $594.24 per year. (generally families of 3 to 5 or more)
b) A bi-weekly pickup costs residents $8.38 per week, $33.52 per month totaling $402.24 per year. (generally families of 1 to 3)
*Contracts are month to month and may be cancelled at any time
c) Twice yearly, the program delivers 10 pounds of mature composted materials that are ready to be integrated into your garden or donated to urban farm partners.

The way I see it, we are currently throwing out a potential resource that typically just goes to a landfill along with other waste streams. Imagine if we can reclaim that waste as a beneficial resource and at the same time reduce costs to the town...what a concept!
Now, we just need to generate more interest and see how many fellow Veronaians might be willing to turn our waste into a resource!
